Thanks for your comment, Scott. I agree with "I think the American people on the whole can make the decision to regulate themselves if given plain spoken truth." The problem is that neither of our parties is willing (or able?) to provide the plain spoken truth that's required. Both believe that speaking the truth and being elected (or re-elected) are mutually exclusive.

The world has changed, which means we can't restore America to its previous greatness (as the Republicans claim we can) and we can't sustain the entitlements to which we've become accustomed (as the Democrats claim we can). Efforts to achieve either (or both) of these goals will fail, and the failure will further poison our politics.

Thanks for sharing this, definitely one of the most thought provoking things I've read in awhile. The problem for me is squaring needed changes (and we have lots) to a country founded on the idea of individual liberty and limited government with rights enshrined in a constitution. I'm drawn to McNamara's quote "If we can’t persuade nations with comparable values of the merit of our cause, we better examine our reasoning." I'm not sure I've heard any leader in this country really try to persuade the American people of the merits of any worthwhile non partisan cause since Bush after 9/11. Maybe Paul Ryan. I'd love to hear it though. Call me crazy, but I think the American people on the whole can make the decision to regulate themselves if given plain spoken truth. (maybe I am crazy)

Wow! Great piece. I have occasionally thought that if corporations really did act in the best long term interests of their shareholders, they would need few regulations. The emphasis on the short term, and the tension between what is best for the corporation and what is best for its management leaves me back in the regulation camp.

Scott,

I'm certainly not suggesting that the wealthy shouldn't be heard -- they (and I include myself as being modestly among them) obviously have as much right to be heard as the less financially fortunate among us.

The issue, as I see it, is that, thanks to the SuperPACs, the voices of the wealthy, be they liberals or conservatives, are louder, more influential, and, worst of all, anonymous. In days gone bye, only those who met property qualifications were enfranchised. Today, few if any Americans would argue (at least openly) that the franchise should be restricted to property owners.

Contributors to SuperPACs are the modern-day men of property. Hiding behind non-partisan sounding labels, they exercise a disproportionate influence on candidates' platforms and public opinion.

If these guys want to give away their hard earned money why can't they?? Does having money eliminate ones right to free speech? Or is free speech rationed out on a per capita basis? What is the level of wealth at which one can't voice their opinion in a matter in which they choose? The opposite of this is more disturbing than the reality, ill advised contaceptive methods and all.

Mark
8.5 percent is nothing to cheer about, especially with the massive gap in total employment. You know this. Its hard to believe that 8 years ago we were having to defend Bush when the media decried 5.5% unemployment as a national tradegy. Think we would ever see that under this clown?

We voted to not re-elect Santorum by one of the larger margins in PA history. There was a good reason for that.

The absurd notion that liberals promote a "culture of victimization" is one of the clearest examples of right-wing projection I've ever witnessed. The ENTIRE conservative movement is built on feeling sorry for themselves and claiming they're the victims of nefarious forces (the "liberal media", "liberal academia", "liberal teacher's unions", "liberal PC culture", "liberal secularists", the "liberal ACLU, etc.) Noticing a pattern here? The left is far, far weaker than the right in America, and yet, they've built up this all-purpose liberal bogeyman / straw-man to blame all its failures on.

The response to this that says we need to cut taxes yet further is difficult to comprehend. (BTW, looks like Congress passed that bill).
